This past May, I had the privilege of spending one of those days at Maidstone Club in East Hampton.
Knowing I’d be in town, I reached out to my friend Ben Clymer, founder of Hodinkee, to see if he’d like to join. Ben has an appreciation for timeless design and craftsmanship that extends far beyond watches, making him the perfect partner for a day at one of America’s most storied clubs.
Maidstone feels unlike anywhere else. It carries the quiet confidence of a place that has never needed to prove itself. The rolling fairways, the ever-present Atlantic breeze, and the understated elegance of the property remind you that the greatest golf clubs aren’t defined by excess—they’re defined by character.
The middle of May couldn’t have delivered better conditions. Cool morning air gave way to warm sunshine, and by the afternoon the course felt exactly as you’d hope an East Hampton spring day would. After the round, we made the mandatory stop for Maidstone’s legendary Southside—a tradition that’s every bit as memorable as the golf itself.
One of the highlights of the visit was touring the ongoing restoration of the club’s historic Tudor clubhouse and beach club. Walking through the spaces, it was clear the work wasn’t about reinventing Maidstone, but preserving what has made it special for generations. Great design isn’t about chasing trends—it’s about respecting history while ensuring it endures.
It’s always rewarding to see Quiet Golf in places that share those same values, so spotting a selection of our pieces in the golf shop was a proud moment. Seeing the brand become part of clubs with such rich histories reminds us why we started in the first place: to create clothing that feels at home wherever golf’s traditions continue to thrive.
The day wasn’t quite over. Ben offered me a ride through East Hampton in his one-of-one Porsche 911 T—a beautifully understated machine with classic plaid seats and a custom Hodinkee dashboard clock. It felt like the automotive equivalent of a perfectly restored clubhouse: thoughtful, personal, and built to last.
We wrapped up the evening meeting my wife and kids for dinner at East Hampton Grill, trading stories from the day over a great meal. It was the perfect ending to a day that blended golf, design, friendship, and family.
Some rounds are memorable because of the golf. Others are memorable because of everything surrounding it.
